My Edits (And Description):
Name: The Pointing Finger of Nature.Date Created: 21 April 2016
Time of Day: Evening, Sun setting.
Content: A tree's twig that was sticking far out from the tree's branches pointing out to the sky.
Meaning Conveyed: My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I did this by making the colour that it was filtered in was green, because green connotes nature.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was point of interest, I did this by making the twig a silhouette whilst the background was filtered in colour green making the twig stand out as it contrasts, originally the photo also showed a depth of field as the sky was is less focus than the twig.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the macro setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I wanted to get the twig in focus and make the background out of focus, to make a shallow depth of field.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used the camera raw feature where I altered the levels to make it green, whilst the twig became a silhouette.
Name:Midnight Leaves
Date Created: 21 April 2016
Time of Day: Evening, Sun setting
Content: A birds eye viewpoint of flowers, with plants surrounding it.
Meaning Conveyed: My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I think I did this by making the flowers, with their natural colours, stand out from the leaves that I edited with a different hue and saturation, which made the leaves darker, which lets the flowers contrast against them more easily.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was point of interest, I did this by making the flowers stand out against the leaves, which the point of interests were enhanced by the editing of the photo. Originally the flowers didn't contrast as much with the leaves and so to make the flowers stand out more I made the leaves a darker hue.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the manual setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as this was just a basic photograph which I focused myself.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used the Hue/Saturation feature by selecting the area with leaves excluding the flowers, I then changed the hue and saturation levels to get the look I had in mind.
Date Created: 21 April 2016
Time of Day: Evening, Sun setting
Content: A close up of a flower which out of a bunch of flowers.
Meaning Conveyed: My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I did this by emphasising on the centre of interest, which is the flower, by making it different to the rest of the image.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was centre of interest, I did this by, like I said, emphasising on it. This was done by making the flower a different medium, making it different to the rest of the photograph may help lead the viewers eyes to the centre of interest because it looks notably different to the rest.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the macro setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I wanted to get the flower in focus for maximum detail and make the background out of focus, to create a shallow depth of field.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used the paint brush tool to give the flower a different look compared to everything else that is natural and untouched by the editing.
Date Created: 21 April 2016
Time of Day created: Evening, Sun setting
Content: A bunch of dying seeds from the tree hanging from one of the twigs.
Meaning Conveyed: My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I did this by showing it through the art style of cubism, I did this by using many different styles I have used across my other photos.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was the rule of thirds, this is shown by the fact that there are a few points of interest that cross the lines when the rule of thirds is applied. The few points of interest are in different looks and so attract the viewers eyes to different parts of the photo, the photo can be looked at as whole photograph, or the viewer can look at and focus on the different parts.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the manual setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I only wanted a basic photograph. I did all the focusing and zooming my self.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used many features, these being; Hue/Saturation, Gradient Mapping, Colour Balance and two filters (Glowing Edge and Grain). These all helped add different centre of interests.
Date Created: 8 April 2016
Time of Day created: Evening, Sun setting
Content: A footpath in the woods with a tree's branch overlapped upon the path.
Meaning Conveyed:My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I did this by layering two images together, they both are things you would usually see in the woods and fit together perfectly as they both are using leading lines.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was leading lines, although the leading lines do not lead to a specific centre of interest, it does have some similar traits, like how the photo was composed.
Technical Aspect Used: I used both the macro setting and landscape setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I used the macro setting on the branch as I wanted to get details on that branch, and then I used the landscape setting to capture the footpath, the landscape feature allowing me to get detail on the area shown.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I got both photos and put them on separate layers and then turned the opacity of the top layer down, allowing you to see the bottom layer.
Date Created: 8 April 2016
Time of Day created: Evening, Cloudy
Content: A white feather laid down on the ground around a rubble of twigs and dirt.
Meaning Conveyed: My meaning behind this was to express tranquility, I did this by making the feather solitary in the image, and being alone can mean tranquility.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was point of interest, I did this by making the feather solitary to the rest of the image, I edited it so that the feather contrasts well against the floor, originally it was brown, dark but still contrasted well against the white feather, but then I made the photo gray scale which made the feather pop out more, making it the point of interest because this photo always directed me to the feather.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the macro setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I wanted to get the twig in focus and make the background out of focus, to make a shallow depth of field.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used both a filter called Ocean Ripple and desaturation. The desaturation was used to make the photo gray scale.
Date Created: 8 April 2016
Time of Day created: Evening, Sun setting
Content: The sun's light shining through the tree branches.
Meaning Conveyed: My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I did this by showing the trees in a silhouette like form, as the light shining through enhanced this as well as making the photo monochrome whilst editing.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was point of interest, the point of interest being the sun, this is because it is the brightest thing on the photo, I think I enhanced the point of interest by making the image monochrome as the darker tones are even darker whilst the sun's light coming through the tree's branches contrasts against these tone, making the sun stand out.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the landscape setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I wanted to get the tree's and sun all in one picture in a better resolution than using manual.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used the Hue/Saturation feature which allowed me to desaturate the photo, making it monochrome, which allowed me make the sun stand out as the centre of interest.
Date Created: 8 April 2016
Time of Day created: Evening, Sun setting
Content: The sun setting behind a hill as well as the light still shining through the branches.
Meaning Conveyed: My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I did this by showing the trees in a silhouette like form, just as I did with the previous photo, as the light shining through enhanced the tree's silhouettes as well as making it monochrome whilst editing.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was point of interest, the point of interest being the sun again, this is because it is the brightest thing on the photo, I think I enhanced the point of interest by making the image monochrome as the darker tones are even darker whilst the sun's light coming through the tree's branches contrasts against these tone, making the sun stand out.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the landscape setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I wanted to get the tree's and sun all in one picture in a better resolution than using manual.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used the gradient map feature to make this image monochrome, instead of desaturating like I did with the other photo.
Date Created: 21 April 2016
Time of Day created: Evening, Sun setting
Content: A bunch of tree's branches and twigs pointing up into the sky.
Meaning Conveyed:My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I did this by emphasising on the trees twigs, I feel the filter I used made the twigs stand out as the sky was made black, this contrasts well against what seems to be white twigs and branches, but if you look closer, are a range of colours merged together.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was mostly just the rule of thirds as there is lots of things crossing the lines if the rule of third were applied, unfortunately there wasn't much of a point of interest as nothing really stood out apart from the sky, or even the trees as they both contrast well together.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the landscape setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I wanted to get the trees in as much detail as I could, whilst keeping a good resolution.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used a filter called Glowing Edges, this is what made the trees have a sort of nylon effect, which contrasted well against the black sky the filter also made.
Name: The Still River
Date Created: 8 April 2016Time of Day created: Evening, Cloudy
Content: A small water fall from the river stream going through the woods behind a small and thin tree.
Meaning Conveyed: My meaning behind this was to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. I did this by showing the water fall behind some small, thin trees. The waterfall could also connote tranquility as, as a small stream you would normally relate to being quiet and silent.
Intentions behind the work: My intention is to show nature in a different way to a basic photograph of nature you might typically see and to persuade people into preserving nature.
Rules of photography Used: The rule of photography I used in this photo was point of interest, as I used a shot of a small streams waterfall which is very natural, whilst having small thin trees in front of it in focus. This may have emphasised on the water fall as it is central in the photo, and also is also a lighter tone as the area surrounding it is a darker tone.
Technical Aspect Used: I used the macro setting on the Cannon DSLR 650D as I wanted to get the small tree in focus and make the background out of focus, to make a shallow depth of field, which helps with making the waterfall a centre of interest as it blurred the colours together making the white part of the stream contrast against the darker parts of the stream and dirt surrounding the waterfall.
Editing Techniques Used: I edited this on Adobe Photoshop. I used the posterise feature to create this more paint like look for it even tho, the trees at the front still look like they have detail whilst the rest do not as much.
Evaluating & Improving:
I believe that my final photos had some good things about them and then some flaws which I could improve. Some of the things that I feel are good about my photos are some of the ways I used some photographic elements (Apart from Leading Lines which I will get on to later). I mostly used the photographic element 'centre of interest', especially using the Macro setting on the DSLR, I did this because the macro setting is used to get great detail on something micro, but it can cause the image in the background to be blurred or out of focus, this enhances the centre of interest as the centre of interest stands out more, especially if the background is darker than the actual point of interest. Another thing I may have done well is composition, although it's quite repetitive throughout all my work because nearly all my photos have a centre of interest, I feel the way I used the point of interest was quite successful.
On the other hand, I could improve in many ways if I was to do this again. My main flaw was not having a true meaning behind my photos, I hadn't really planned on showing meaning, instead I just took the photo without the thought of showing meaning, although they all mostly did show a meaning, and that is to help persuade people to want to preserve nature by showing the beauty of it. With the way I used photographic elements, I could have definitely improved, this mainly being the ones I had tried to use 'leading lines', the purpose of a leading line is to show a line, whether that be a road, train tracks or a river, that leads to a centre of interest, I have not done this, I have shown a line but not a centre of interest, this would have been useful if I had done it correctly, and maybe of enhanced the meaning. I could have also explored using different lighting too, like Direct, Back light, Reflected and Diffused lighting .The thing I could have definitely improved on is the technical aspects such as EV mode, which would have let me control the lighting, also the manual use of aperture, shutter speed and focus.
In conclusion, my final photos do fit the brief, because it was set by the Millennium Gallery to show the theme of identity, whilst fitting into the ethos of the Millennium Gallery. I think it does because the clear identity I'm trying to represent is 'Sheffield's Nature', it also fits into the ethos as it states it needs to have a green and environmental friendly, my theme of identity yet again fitting this as it shows the nature of Sheffield and how I'm trying to persuade people to help keep the nature safe by showing the beauty of nature. I feel as though my final photos compare more to David Hockney's work than any other photographer I looked at, I think this because the way I have done mine do not look like any of the other photographers, maybe my 'Lonely Feather','The Captive Sun' and 'The Sinking Sun' work compare closely to Duncan Phillpott's work as it wasn't edited much and looked simple and straight to the point. On the other hand, the rest relate more to David Hockney as his are more based around editing and they look a bit more different and unique compared to the other photographer's work. If I was to do this again I would focus my photographs more on the style of Duncan Phillpott's and Martin Parr's work as they feel like they are more professional, especially Duncan Phillpotts. I could have worked towards this by not editing my images as much as I did and look more like 'The Captive Sun' piece.
